More than just another artiste

Kym is the newest female member of the Alliance who has turned her back on her past catastrophe and is moving on with a fresh start. Kym is not just a young singer with many dreams, but also writes her own songs and is very passionate about music. This jovial young woman, a past student of Ascot High School, is one of Jamaica’s well-loved singers. Kym, who thinks Lady Saw’s persona has been influencing her career lately, sat with the Portmore Sun to share her musical endeavours.

Do you remember your first time onstage?
What was it like? Yes. Anthony B’s show at Somerset Falls in 2009. I panicked a little – at the same time it was fun, because it was my first time going in front of this large audience. But, after getting the response of the patrons who wanted to hear what I had to say, it was good. Not to mention my police attire that stood out among the other performers that the patrons loved.

What was your last most memorable experience?

About three months ago, in Guyana, when I was performing and the patrons were shouting my name and eager to come and perform onstage with me. I was even called back onstage.

How hectic is your recording schedule?
Does it leave time for other things? It’s very hectic. Most times I have to be in and out of the studio, which often is conflicting with my personal time or leisure time. I rarely have time to do other things, but yes, I have to manage my time properly in order to make the most of my career.

What do you normally do in your downtime? When I am not at my best I usually dance (practise my gymnastic skills), watch television and surf the Internet, which will eventually make me feel more at ease.

Do you have any plans for an album? Yes, it’s in the making.

What audience will it be targeting?
It will be for the general public, so that everyone can enjoy my songs, because I’m not just an artiste – I’m an entertainer.

Name a great memory from your childhood that you have of Portmore.
I remember one day, I was going to choir practice and I was going into a minibus. Suddenly, my hairpiece fell off my head. With no hesitation, I quickly picked it up and put it back on, hoping that no one saw. Of course, a girl saw and was laughing. Up until this day this memory still brings me laughter.

Amen concert at Mojo's on 29th January featuring Kym (formerly Gaza Kim)

The artist formerly known as Gaza Kim, from the Gaza crew, will be performing at the Mojo's night club on Main Street in Georgetown on 29th January, 2011. This Ruff Kut and Mojo's production is expected to attract many of the Guyanese females, since the GT ladies have identified with her hit single 'Amen'.

Kym, as she is called now, has additional hits such as 'School Anthem', 'Twice My Age', 'Call Call Call, 'Danger', and 'Faithful'.
